That doleful night before his death. Joseph Hart* (1712-1768).
This was not in the First Edition of Hart’s Hymns, &c., Composed on various Subjects (1759). It comes from the 1762 Edition, in the Supplement ‘For the Lord’s Supper. 20 Hymns’. It was Hymn XVII:
That doleful Night before his Death, The Lamb for Sinners slain Did almost with his latest Breath This solemn Feast ordain.To keep this Feast, Lord, are we met; And to remember Thee.Help each poor Trembler to repeat, For Me, he died, For Me.
Thy Suff’rings, Lord, each sacred Sign To our Remembrance bring. We eat the Bread, and drink the Wine; But think on nobler Things. O, tune our Tongues, and set in Frame Each Heart...
