Teach me, O Lord, thy holy way
Teach me, O Lord, thy holy way. William Tidd Matson* (1833-1899).
First published in Matson’s eccentric poem, The Inner Life (1866), entitled ‘Divine Guidance desired’. It was used as a hymn by Godfrey Thring* in A Church of England Hymn Book (1880). It became popular with Congregationalists, appearing in the Congregational Church Hymnal (1887) and in subsequent books including CP, where it is sung to FULDA, by William Gardiner*. It is still found in HP, set to a Swiss traditional melody entitled SOLOTHURN in HP. Its five stanzas are beautifully structured, with an ABBA rhyme scheme, to provide a set of precepts, beginning with obedience and service:
Teach me, O Lord, Thy holy way, And...
