T(h)ut mir auf die schöne Pforte. Benjamin Schmolck* (1672-1737). First published in Schmolck’s Der geistliche Kirchen-Gefährte (Schweidnitz, 1732), with the first word as ‘Thut’, in seven 6-line stanzas, entitled ‘Der erste Schritt in die Kirche’ (‘The first step in the church’). It is found in EG in six stanzas, omitting stanza 7 (‘Oefne mir die grünen Auen’) (‘the green meadows’) in the ‘Eingang und Ausgang’ section (EG 166). The hymn is appropriately placed in EG. It describes the believer coming to God, and praying for God to come to him or her: ‘Zieh in meinem Herzen ein,/ lass es deinen Tempel sein’.
