Sylvanus Dryden Phelps
PHELPS, Sylvanus Dryden. b. Suffield, Connecticut, 15 May 1816; d. New Haven, Connecticut, 23 November 1895. Phelps attended Connecticut Literary Institute; Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, (BA, 1844) and Yale Divinity School (BD 1847). After ordination, he was pastor at the First Baptist Church, New Haven (1846-74), and then briefly at the Jefferson Street Baptist Church, Providence, Rhode Island (1874-76). He resigned to become editor of The Christian Secretary, a Baptist newspaper published at Hartford, Connecticut.
