Spirit of God! Who, midst a dark creation. Thomas George Crippen* (1841-1929).
This hymn is entitled ‘Prayer for Parliament’. It is a more strident expression of Crippen’s admiration for democratic government than his ‘O God Who holdest in Thy hand’*. The text was preceded by ‘“He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.” – 2 SAM. xxiii. 3.’:
Spirit of God! Who, midst a dark creation Diffusing life, upon the waters went; Rest Thou upon the rulers of our nation, God bless our Parliament!
Spirit of Wisdom! grant a plenteous measure Of that true wisdom, which from Heaven is sent, Which prizes truth above all earthly treasure: God bless our Parliament!
