Source and Sovereign, Rock and Cloud
Source and Sovereign, Rock and Cloud. Thomas Troeger* (1945-2022).
Written in 1987 for the Hymnal Revision Committee of the United Methodist Church, and included in UMH, this hymn was a response to a call for texts that would use multiple images for God. Thirteen authors were contacted with a list of words and phrases, and Troeger responded with this hymn, which in three verses incorporates 39 of them, ending each verse with the refrain:
May the church at prayer recall
that no single holy name
but the truth behind them all
is the God whom we proclaim.
