Sollt ich meinem Gott nicht singen
Sollt ich meinem Gott nicht singen. Paul Gerhardt* (1607-1676).
First published in Johann Crüger* and Christoph Runge*, D.M. Luthers und andere vornehmen geistreichen und gelehrten Männer geistliche Lieder und Psalmen (Berlin, 1653) (the ‘Crüger-Runge Gesangbuch’). It had twelve 10-line stanzas, with each verse ending ‘Alles Ding währt seine Zeit,/ Gottes Lieb in Ewigkeit’ (‘All things run their course below/ God’s love doth for ever flow’). The final verse 12 has a delightful variant, ‘Bis ich dich nach dieser Zeit/ Lob und lieb in Ewigkeit’ (‘And when life is o’er with me,/ Love and praise eternally’). It is shortened to ten stanzas in EG, omitting verses 8 and 9:
