Sing to the Lord of harvest
Sing to the Lord of harvest. John Samuel Bewley Monsell* (1811-1875).
This was at one time a very popular hymn for harvest or for Rogation-tide (where Monsell himself placed it in 1873). It was first printed in his Hymns of Love and Praise for the Church’s Year (Second Edition, 1866), in four 8-line stanzas. Monsell, who was always tinkering with his hymns, altered line 1 to ‘Sing to the Lord of bounty’ in The Parish Hymnal according to the Order of The Book of Common Prayer (1873), perhaps because it was intended for Rogation days; but this was not generally adopted when the hymn was printed in other books.
