Shepherds came, their praises bringing. Latin, translated by George Bradford Caird* (1917-1984). This is a translation of the Latin carol ‘Quem pastores laudavere’*. It was made by Caird in 1944, when he was minister of Highgate Congregational Church, London, and published in CP (1951). It was revised in 1981, and published in its new form in HFTC  (1982). In stanza 3 the later text follows the Latin in its reference to Mary (‘Per Mariam nobis dato’), which Caird had left out in 1944:   19441981 Jesus, born the King of Heaven Unto us in mercy given, Be unto Thy merit truly Honour, praise, and glory done.
