Schmückt das Fest mit Maien. Benjamin Schmolck* (1672-1737).
First published in Das in gebundenen Seufzern mit Gott verbundene Andächtige Hertze (Breslau and Liegnitz, 1714), entitled ‘Pfingst-Lied’ (‘Hymn for Whitsuntide’). It had nine 10-line stanzas. In EG it is naturally in the ‘Pfingsten’ section, shortened to seven verses (EG 135). The omitted verses were 4 (‘Helles Licht, erleuchte’) and 6 (‘Schlage deine Flammen’).
The hymn beautifully combines the promise of spring and the coming of flowers in May with the idea of the fruit of the Spirit, ending with the hope of an eternal spring, ‘bei den grünen Himmelsmaien/ ewig uns...
