Saviour, who thy flock art feeding. William Augustus Muhlenberg* (1796-1877).
This prayer for the welfare of children was first published in The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of the Sacraments and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church in the United States of America, known as the ‘Prayer Book Collection’ (1826). According to JJ, this was ‘the most widely known of Dr Muhlenberg’s hymns’ (p. 775). In Britain it was printed in Lyra Americana (1865), with a title, ‘He carrieth the Lambs in His Bosom’. It had been included in the SPCK Psalms and Hymns for Public Worship (1852), and in the ‘Holy Baptism’ section of Church Hymns (1871), the only one of Muhlenberg’s hymns to appear...
