Sacred Latin Poetry
Sacred Latin Poetry, 1849. Richard Chenevix Trench* (1807-1886).
The full title of this major anthology was Sacred Latin Poetry, Chiefly Lyrical, selected and arranged for use; with notes and introduction: by Richard Chenevix Trench, M.A., vicar of Itchenstoke, Hants, and late Hulsean Lecturer. It was published in 1849. It contained 71 Latin hymns, with useful and detailed notes. There was a Preface of 14 pages and a substantial introduction of 60 pages. The Preface began with a complicated declaration that was clearly of some importance in 1849, at a time when Catholic conversion was becoming significant:
