Robert George Thompson
THOMPSON, Robert George. b. Stockton-on-Tees, Co. Durham, 5 November 1862; d. Middlesbrough (now in Cleveland), 6 January 1934. He attended the Wesleyan Day School in Middlesbrough, which suggests that he was born into a Wesleyan Methodist family. He trained for the teaching profession at Westminster College, London, a Wesleyan Methodist foundation. He became a teacher at Middlesbrough, but then took an external BMus degree from Durham University, and made music his profession. He was well known in the north-east of England as a composer of anthems and a conductor of choirs.
