Rigdon M. McIntosh
McINTOSH, Rigdon McCoy. b. Maury County, near Columbia, Tennessee, 3 April 1836; d. Atlanta, Georgia, 4 July 1899. McIntosh graduated from Jackson College, Columbia (1854), and taught high school English and mathematics briefly before embarking upon a career in music with brothers L. C. and Asa Brooks Everett, who owned a successful enterprise based in Richmond, Virginia, teaching vocal music throughout the southern and middle Atlantic states in the years before the American Civil War. He began composing hymn tunes in the late 1850s while in the employ of the Everetts and united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, shortly after his marriage in 1860.
