Richard Hulan
HULAN, Richard Huffman. b. Shelbyville, Tennessee, 31 July 1939. He is a folk hymn specialist, coauthor with David Warren Steel* of The Makers of the Sacred Harp, known for directorships, presentations, and publications in a wide variety of folk-related areas.
Richard Hulan is the son of the Reverend Roy Snyder Hulan (1910-1991) and Polly Huffman Hulan (1914-1998). He graduated from William B. Murrah High School, Jackson, Mississippi, in 1957 and has three degrees from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee: BA (major in Russian), 1961; BD, 1964; and MA (thesis: ‘Our Creed in Metre: the hymnology of the Restoration Movement to 1835’), 1971.
