Precious these waters, endless seas (Called by Earth and Sky). Pat Mayberry * (1950– ). ‘Called by Earth and Sky’ (2005) is a text rich in both biblical allusion and nature imagery. Like the apostle Paul in the Epistle to the Romans (1: 20) and also in his sermon in Athens (Acts 17: 16-34), the text asserts that signs of God’s divine nature are to be seen and understood in God’s creation. The refrain of Mayberry’s hymn articulates the sacred nature of the earth and the responsibility of the humanity to respond to the summons of ‘earth and sky’:  Called by earth and sky, promise of hope held high, thus is our sacred trust, treasure of life sanctified, called by earth and sky.
