Phoebe Cary

CARY, Phoebe. b. Hamilton County, Ohio, 4 September 1824; d. Newport, Rhode Island, 31 July 1871. Born on a farm, she became part of an independent family: when her mother died and her father remarried, three sisters lived together in the care of the eldest, Alice (1820-1871). Both Phoebe and Alice became well known writers: Alice based her ‘Clovernook’ sketches and stories, which made her famous in her time, on the early experiences in Ohio. Poems by the two sisters appeared in Female Poets of America (1849); encouraged by their inclusion in this anthology, they published Poems of Alice and Phoebe Cary (1850).
