Personent hodie. Latin, from Piae Cantiones.
This is No 5 in the first section of Piae Cantiones (Greifswald, 1582), ‘Cantiones de Nativitate Domini & Saluatoris nostri Iesu Christi’. It had four Stanzas:
Personent hodie voces puerulaelaudantes iucundè qui nobis est natus,summo Deo datus,& de virgineo ventre procreatus.
In mundo nascitur, pannis involvitur,Praesepi ponitur stabulo brutorum,Rector supernorum, perdidit spolia princeps infernorum.
Magi tres venerunt, parvulum inquirunt,Jane Marian JosephStellulam sequendo, ipsum adorando,Aurum, thus & myrrham ei offerendo.
Omnes clericuli, pariter pueriCantent ut angeli, advenisti mundo,Laudes tibi fundo. Ideo gloria in excelsis...
