Out of the depths I cry to thee. Martin Luther* (1483-1546), translated by Catherine Winkworth* (1827-1878). The German text, ‘Aus tiefer Noth schrei ich zu dir’*, was Luther’s paraphrase of Psalm 130, a psalm that he greatly loved. Winkworth made two translations, the first for Lyra Germanica I (1855), the second for The Chorale Book for England (1863).
