Our Father, hear our longing prayer. George MacDonald* (1824-1905).
First published in Hymns and Sacred Songs for Sunday-schools and Social Worship (Manchester, 1855), which MacDonald edited with his brother Charles (1823-1905) and George Burden Bubier*. It was based on one of the Beatitudes, ‘Blessed are the poor in spirit’ (Matthew 5: 3). In one book, Laudes Domini: a selection of spiritual songs ancient and modern (New York, 1884), edited by Charles S. Robinson*, it was given the title of ‘Humble Thoughts’ from stanza 1 line 3. It had four stanzas:
