Once more the solemn season calls

Once more the solemn season calls. Latin, 18th century, translated by John Chandler* (1806-1876). This is a translation of ‘Solemne nos jejunii/ Nunc tempus ad planctum vocat’ (‘Now the solemn time calls us, fasting, to lament’) from the Paris Breviary of 1736. It was made by Chandler for his Hymns of the Primitive Church (1837), where it was designated for Matins in Lent. It was printed in the First Edition of A&M  (1861), with alterations that make the hymn slightly more straightforward, but no less suitable for the Lenten season:                  Chandler                                                         A&M 1861 The solemn season calls us now                   Once more...
