On wings of living light. William Walsham How* (1823-1897).
This Easter hymn was first published in 1872 in the SPCK Children’s Hymns (it was not, as is sometimes stated, in Church Hymns, 1871). It had six stanzas, with a strong and yet simple narrative in stanzas 1-3, followed by an encouragement to the ‘children of the light’. This may refer specifically to children (one of the later names for How was ‘the children’s bishop’), but it may also refer to adults as, metaphorically, God’s children:
On wings of living light, At earliest dawn of day Came down the angel bright, And rolled the stone away.Your voices raise with one accord,To bless and praise your risen Lord.
