Oluf H. Smeby
SMEBY, Oluf Hanson. b. Rock County, Wisconsin, 31 January 1851; d. 6 July 1929. Educated at Luther College (AB, 1871) and Concordia Seminary, St Louis, Missouri, Smeby was pastor at Albert Lea, Minnesota, for almost half a century. An eminent Lutheran, he was chairman of the English Committee for The Lutheran Hymnary (1913), used by the Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Synod, the Hauge Evangelical Lutheran Synod, and the United Norwegian Lutheran Church of America. His translations from Norwegian and German were found in the 1913 Hymnary, and four remained in The Lutheran Hymnal (1941):
