O thou not made with hands
O thou not made with hands. Francis Turner Palgrave* (1824-1897).
First published in Palgrave’s Hymns (1867). It is based on many scriptural references to a temple or tabernacle not made with hands, such as Mark 14: 58, 2 Corinthians 5: 1, and Hebrews 9: 11. Palgrave takes the idea of a spiritual city or temple and skilfully applies it to various elements of the Christian life, as in the opening to stanzas 2, 3 and 4, following stanza 1:
O Thou not made with hands, Not throned above the skies,Nor walled with shining walls, Nor framed with stones of price,More bright than gold or gem,God's own Jerusalem.
Where'er the gentle heart Finds courage from above;...
Thou art where'er the proud...
