O Holy Spirit, Lord of grace. Charles Coffin* (1676-1749), translated by John Chandler* (1806-1876). This is a translation of Coffin’s two-stanza hymn, ‘O fons amoris, Spiritus’, published in the Paris Breviary of 1736 and in Hymni Sacri Auctore Carolo Coffin (1736). Chandler’s translation appeared in his Hymns of the Primitive Church (1837) in three stanzas. It was altered by the compilers of the First Edition of A&M (1861), but EH returned to Chandler’s original text.
