O Holy Spirit, enter in. Michael Schirmer* (1606-1673), translated by Catherine Winkworth* (1829-1878).
Schirmer’s hymn, ‘O Heilger Geist, kehr bei uns ein’* was published by Johann Crüger* in Newes vollkömliches Gesangbuch/ Augspurgischer Confession (Berlin, 1640), and then in D.M. Luthers und anderer vornehmen geistreichen und gelehrten Männer geistliche Lieder und Psalmen (Berlin, 1653) (‘the Crüger-Runge Gesangbuch’). It had seven stanzas. It was translated by Catherine Winkworth in The Chorale Book for England (1863):
O Holy Spirit, enter in, O Heilger Geist, kehr bei uns ein Among these hearts Thy work...
