Based on 1 Corinthians 13, this was written at Ruan Minor, Cornwall, in August 1984. It followed a conference of the Hymn Society of America at Elmhurst, Illinois, during which the author had a conversation with Bob Batastini*, who was looking for a new hymn for Worship, Third Edition to be sung to Peter Cutts*s tune BRIDEGROOM (composed for ‘As the bridegroom to his chosen’* by Emma Frances Bevan’). Back in the United Kingdom, Dudley-Smith was approached by the BBC for a hymn for a Songs of Praise festival programme (its first publication was in Songs of Praise I , 1985).
