Norman Nicholson
NICHOLSON, Norman Cornthwaite. b. Millom, Cumbria, 8 January 1914; d. Whitehaven, Cumbria, 30 May 1987. Educated at Millom, Nicholson spent his whole life in the town, apart from two years in hospital in the south of England with tuberculosis (1930-32). For most of the remainder of his life he lived in the house in which he had been born, above his father’s shop. His late memoir, Wednesday Early Closing (1975), describes the town of his childhood. He was a local poet and writer, devoted to the landscape and history of Cumberland.
