Michael W. Smith

SMITH, Michael W.  b. Kenova, West Virginia, 7 October 1957. Prominent singer-songwriter and keyboardist in the Christian popular music industry, Smith began playing piano and writing songs as a young child, and was active in his church's choir.  He attended one semester at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia before moving to Nashville where his first jobs were playing keyboards with a few Christian artists, including emerging Christian star Amy Grant*.  As a songwriter, he gained recognition for the worship song ‘How Majestic is Your Name’, recorded in 1982 by Sandi Patty (1956- ), as well as for composing songs with and for artists including Grant and Bill Gaither*.  Grant's...
