SHEKLETON, Mary. b., place and date unknown, 1827; d. Dublin, 28 September 1883. She was born in England, but the place and exact date are unknown. After the death of her father when she was six months old, her mother returned to her family home in Ireland with her children. Shekleton was deeply influenced by her mother, who had experienced an evangelical conversion on the death of her husband, and brought up her four daughters in a prayerful, scripture-centred household where an emphasis was placed on Christian service. Mary’s health was always poor: a sister recalled that ‘she appeared to be in deep consumption’ (Chosen, p. 11), and many believed that she would not survive childhood...
