Martin Behm

BEHM, Martin (Martinus Bohemus). b. 16 September 1557; d. 5 February 1622. Born at Lauban, Oberlausitz, Silesia (now Lubań, Poland), into a family from Bohemia (his father was a town official), he grew up there; in 1574, during a famine, he was taken by a relative, Dr Paulus Fabricius, to Vienna, where he supported himself as a private tutor. He then studied at Strasbourg, paying for his studies by teaching, before returning to Lauban in 1580 on the death of his father. He taught at the town school before being appointed second pastor at the church of the Holy Trinity in 1581. He became Oberpfarrer (chief pastor) in 1586.
