Marianne Nunn
NUNN, Marianne. b. Colchester, Essex, 17 May 1778; d. Colchester, 27 February 1847 (Taylor, 1989, p. 378). Gordon Taylor tells us that her contemporaries called her ‘Mary Ann’, and that she kept a school for young ladies in Colchester from 1821 (and perhaps earlier) until 1836. She was the daughter of a wine and brandy merchant, John Nunn, and died unmarried (JJ, pp. 823-4; Taylor, p. 378). She was the eldest of seven children, with four brothers, three of whom, John, William, and Preston, became clergymen, John in Suffolk, William (who also wrote hymns) in Manchester, Preston in Shropshire.
