Lord Jesus, in the days of old. James Ashcroft Noble* (1844-1896).
This was published in Noble’s Verses of a Prose Writer (1887), where it was called ‘A Hymn for Evening, written for the girls at Wintersdorf’ (Noble had lectured on English literature to the girls of Wintersdorf School, Birkdale, Southport). It appeared in the Appendix to the Revised Edition of the school’s Wintersdorf Hymnal compiled by Mary S. Simon (1912). It was subsequently included the Wesleyan Methodist School Hymnal (1911) in six stanzas, omitting stanza 5 (see below).
