Lord, you give the great commission. Jeffery Rowthorn* (1934- ).
Written in 1978, this was first published in Laudamus: Services and Songs of Praise (1980), a hymnal for use at Yale Divinity School (Rowthorn was teaching at the Institute of Sacred Music at the time).
It was written for the tune ABBOT'S LEIGH. It is a hymn that incorporates a saying of Our Lord in the second line of each stanza with a commendable neatness:
‘Heal the sick and preach the word’
‘In my name baptize and teach’
‘This my body, this my blood’
‘Father, what they do, forgive’
‘I am with you to the end’.
It is particularly appropriate for a Divinity School in its call to mission and service: every stanza ends...
