First published anonymously in a supplement to the ‘Shawbury Hymn Book, Shrewsbury’ (A Collection of Psalms and Hymns. Extracted from Dr Watts, and other Authors, 2nd Edition, Shrewsbury, 1773), and attributed to Fawcett in A Selection of Psalms & Hymns (1791) (the evidence for authorship is discussed in detail in JJ, p. 687). It was not included in Fawcett’s own Hymns: adapted to the circumstances of Public Worship and Private Devotion (1782), or in his A Brief Supplement to the Hymns and Psalms of Isaac Watts (1815).
