Light of the world, from whom all truth proceeding. George Wallace Briggs* (1875-1959).
First published in Prayers and Hymns for use in Schools (1928) in five stanzas, and later included in Briggs’s selection of his own hymns, Songs of Faith (1945), and in the book that Briggs edited for use in Worcester Cathedral, Hymns of the Faith (1957), though with a different version of line 1 in both books: ‘God who art light, from whom all truth proceeding’. It is a profound meditation on light as truth and as the illumination of spiritual life, though with a complex diction and convoluted syntax that seem unsuited to school use. It was printed in The School Hymn-Book of the Methodist Church (1950)...
