Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates

Lift up your heads, ye mighty gates. Georg Weissel* (1590-1635), translated by Catherine Winkworth* (1827-1878). Winkworth’s translation of Weissel’s famous hymn, ‘Macht hoch die Tür, die Tor macht weit’*(the first hymn in EG) was made for Lyra Germanica I (1855), and re-written for Crüger’s tune in the ‘Advent’ section of The Chorale Book for England (1863). It has been altered and shortened in some British and American books from the original 88.88.88.66 to LM, where it is usually set to TRURO.
