Lift up your heads, ye gates of brass
Lift up your heads, ye gates of brass. James Montgomery* (1771-1854). This is part of a long missionary hymn in nineteen stanzas entitled ‘China Evangelized’, published in the Evangelical Magazine in 1843. It was printed with the text ‘The Lord of hosts mustereth the host of the battle (Isaiah 13:4)’. It is undated in the author’s manuscripts, but must have been written during a period of intense and successful missionary work in China. Verse 18 was:
Then fear not, faint not, halt not now,
Quit you like men, be strong:
To Christ shall Buddha’s votaries bow,
And sing with you this song:…
By the time of Church Hymns (1871) lines 2-4 had been amended to
In Jesu’s name be strong!
