Liebe, die du mich zum Bilde. Johannes Scheffler (‘Angelus Silesius’)* (1624-1677).
First published in Scheffler’s Heiligen Seelen-lust, oder Geistliche Hirten-Lieder (Breslau, 1657), Book III, where it is ‘Das Hundert und Siebende’ (the 107th hymn), headed ‘Sie ergibet sich der ewigen Liebe’ (‘She [the Soul] gives herself up to eternal love’). It had six 6-line stanzas; a further stanza (4) was added in the Geistreiches Gesang-Buch (Halle, 1697). This stanza has remained in use: in EG the hymn is in the ‘Geborgen in Gottes Liebe’ (‘Safe in God’s love’) section, in seven 6-line stanzas (EG 401). The last two lines of each stanza are a refrain: ‘Liebe, dir ergeb ich mich,/ dein zu bleiben...
