Kenneth Leighton
LEIGHTON, Kenneth. b. Wakefield, West Yorkshire, 2 October 1929; d. 24 August 1988. He was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield (1940-47) and Queen’s College, Oxford (1947-51) (BA in Classics, BMus, both 1951; DMus 1970). He won the Mendelssohn Scholarship in 1951, enabling him to study in Rome with Goffredo Petrassi before embarking on a career as a composer, pianist and academic: he was Professor of Theory, Royal Marines School of Music (1952-53); Gregory Fellow in Music, University of Leeds (1953-55); successively Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader in Music, University of Edinburgh (1955-68); University Lecturer in Music and Fellow of Worcester College, Oxford...
