Katharine L. Bates
BATES, Katharine Lee. b. Falmouth, Massachusetts, 12 August 1859; d. Wellesley, Massachusetts, 28 March 1929. Born at Falmouth, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of a Congregational minister who died when she was a baby. When she was 12 the family moved to Wellesley, Massachusetts, and in spite of impoverished circumstances she was educated at Wellesley College (BA 1880). After teaching in two schools, Natick School and Dana Hall, she was appointed an Instructor at Wellesley in 1885; she later became Head of English.
