ETT, Kaspar. b. Freising, Bavaria, 5 Jan 1788; d. Munich, 16 May 1847. Born in upper Bavaria, he became organist at the church of St Michael in Munich from 1816 until his death there. He composed several Masses and other Catholic church music.
Ett is known to hymnody as the probable composer of the tune ORIEL. The first known printing of the tune is in J.M. Hauber’s Cantica Sacra in Usum Studiosae Juventutis. Collegit et edidit J. Michael Hauber… Cantui Chorali accommodavit vocem organi Casparus Ett (Munich, 1840). The title suggests that Ett provided the music for this book, and in an English version, Easy Music for Church Choirs Part III (1853), he was named as the composer. It was set...
