Joshua Marshman
MARSHMAN, Joshua. b. Westbury Leigh, Wiltshire, 20 April 1768; d. Serampore, India, 5 December 1837. The son of a Baptist weaver, Marshman was educated at the village school, and thereafter educated himself by wide reading. In 1794 he became master of the Baptist Broadmead School, Bristol, while also studying at the Bristol Baptist College (Greek and Latin, Hebrew and Syriac). In 1799 he went to India with his redoubtable wife Hannah to become one of a famous trio of Baptist missionaries: the others were William Ward (1769-1823) and William Carey (1761-1834).
