John W. David
DAVID, John Winter. b. Guernsey, Channel Islands, 1837; d. Guernsey, 7 September 1902. His musical talent was inherited from his parents: his first instruments were the fife and accordion, and then the violin. On his twelfth birthday he received a piano, and took lessons from W. A. Crousaz, organist of the town parish church. After playing the seraphim (a sort of harmonium) at the village chapel, in 1853 he was appointed organist at the French Wesleyan Chapel (Victoria Road). He had organ lessons from Dr. [William Henry] Longhurst, organist of Canterbury Cathedral. He worked in the Receiver-General’s office, becoming chief clerk, and he was active in local government.
