John Samuel Bewley Monsell
MONSELL, John Samuel Bewley. b. Londonderry, Ireland 2 March 1811; d. Guildford, 9 April 1875. He was the son of an archdeacon of Derry, and brother of the politician William Monsell, first Baron Emly (1812-94). He entered Trinity College, Dublin (BA 1832). He was ordained (deacon 1834, priest 1835), and was successively chaplain to Bishop Richard Mant*; Chancellor of the diocese of Connor; rector of Ramoan, Co. Antrim; vicar of Egham, Surrey (1853-70); and rector of St Nicolas, Guildford (1870-75).
Monsell was a prolific writer, producing eleven volumes of verse, which included 300 hymns; the most important ones appeared in Hymns and Miscellaneous Poems (Dublin, 1837); Spiritual Songs...
