John Relly Beard
BEARD, John Relly. b. Portsmouth, 4 August 1800; d. Ashton upon Mersey, 22 November 1876. He was educated at Portsmouth and in France (paid for by a member of the Portsmouth Unitarian chapel). He entered Manchester College (then at York) in 1820, and became a Unitarian minister at Salford, Manchester, then with the same congregation at Strangeways, Manchester (1825-64). He also ran a school to augment his income, and was enthusiastically engaged in promoting education for all.
