John Lingard

LINGARD, John. b. Winchester, 5 February 1771; d. Hornby, Lancashire, 17 July 1851. Born into an old Catholic family, Lingard entered the English College at Douai in 1782. When the College was closed by the French Revolutionary government in 1793, Lingard was a member of the College which took refuge to County Durham in northern England, and which took up residence in the new building at Ushaw College, west of Durham, in 1808. After a brief period (1810-11) as Acting Principal, which he did not like, he took up a post at the Catholic Mission at Hornby, Lancashire in 1811, remaining there until his death.
