John Henry Newman

NEWMAN, John Henry. b. London, 21 February 1801; d. Birmingham, 11 August 1890. He was the son of a banker. Educated at Ealing School (1808-16) where he excelled academically, then Trinity College, Oxford (1817-20), where he achieved disastrous results; but after winning a college scholarship in 1818, he returned to a fellowship at Oriel College in 1822. He took Holy Orders (deacon 1824, priest 1825), was appointed to a tutorship at Oriel in 1826, and became vicar of the University Church of St Mary’s in 1828.
