John Heavyside
HEAVYSIDE, John. b. England, 1799; d. Grahamstown, South Africa, 1861. Heavyside served as colonial chaplain in Grahamstown from 1833 until his death in 1861, and for much of that period (until 1848) he was the sole Anglican cleric in the vicinity. Originally ordained in India in 1830 while engaged in missionary work, Heavyside was subsequently transferred to Mauritius in 1831 owing to ill health, and then to Cape Town the following year. Opting to remain in South Africa, he was appointed to St George’s Church in Grahamstown, where he ministered for nearly three decades.
