John H. Sammis
SAMMIS, John H. b. Brooklyn, New York, 6 July 1846; d. Los Angeles, California, 12 June 1919. In his early twenties Sammis moved to the mid West, and became a successful businessman in Logansport, Indiana, working also for the YMCA. He married Mary Trowbridge. He felt called to the ministry, and trained at the (Presbyterian) McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago, Illinois, and then at Lane Theological Seminary, Cincinnati, Ohio (where Lyman Beecher had been President).
Sammis was ordained to the Presbyterian ministry in 1880, and served at Glidden, Iowa; Indianapolis, Indiana; Grandhaven, Michigan; Red Wing, Minnesota; and Sullivan, Indiana. His final working years were spent at the Los...
